Standardisation → Mass Customisation

Configuration is becoming the product. Industrial systems now deliver one-of-one outcomes at series volume.

The journal records this movement repeatedly: what once signalled value as standardisation now signals it as mass customisation. The change is not cosmetic, it reorders where budget, talent and attention should go.

What the experience taught

  • Customisation is an operating system, not an options list, design the configurator before the product.
  • The commission conversation is the luxury; the object is its receipt.
  • Printing, robotics and modular tooling make a run of one cost close to a run of many.

From the field

  • Bentley Bentayga “Huntsman edition”, Jack Barclay, a bespoke commission run through a production line.
  • Aston Martin, Gaydon, the Q personalisation studio and restoration house treating every car as a separate brief.
  • Rolls-Royce HQ, with Giles Taylor, where the commissioning conversation precedes the specification.
  • AI SpaceFactory, 3D printing making a bespoke structure cost the same as a repeated one.
